On Tuesday, we set of on a train trip to Trieste, which lies at the top of the Adriatic, a good bit past Venice, and on the border with Slovenia and Croatia. A visit to Croatia was tempting, but in the event, it didn't happen.
On the way, we had a stop at Prato, just short of Firenze, where there was an exhibition of paintings by early renaissance artist Bernardo Daddi, before proceeding on our way to Trieste - a journey of nine hours all told!
From our little attic flat in the centre of Trieste, we could just see one corner of the main square.
