On Wednesday, we set off from Tellaro on the homeward trek. A fine cobbled path led steeply up to the cluster of houses at Zanego, then a much gentler path led down a wide valley to the town of Ameglia with its imposing castle.
From Ameglia, we had to get the bus to Sarzana, then a train to Viareggio, where there was time for an excellent gelato, then another train to Lucca - coffee was had - and then a third train up into the Garfagnana and home. Tired but happy!

| Ameglia and its castle appear in the middle distance, with the valley of the River Magra beyond. In the far distance, on the slopes of the Alpi Apuane is the village of Castelpoggio (I think!) |

| Like Barga, Ameglia is a fortified town with many houses incorporated in the walls. Isn't the terracotta drainpipe a joy to behold - compared to the modern plastic equivalent! |
this last picture of a medieval block of flats is amazing...
