Naples - getting to know you ...

We found Naples amazing.  It was more like Kathmandu or Marrakesh than any Italian city we've been to - with the possible exception of Palermo.  Narrow streets thronged with people ...

Our room looked out over Piazza Dante - that's him on the pedestal ...
We caught the funicular up to the Castel Sant'Elmo to see the views and to get our bearings

Vesuvius broods over the Bay of Naples as it has always done ...
The dark "structure" in the centre is actually the long dark street called SpaccaNapoli - the name means "Split Naples" - for obvious reasons
Back in the streets, his citizen showed explained that these statues of Hippogryphs at the portico of this palazzo were for "spegnere i torci" (stubbing out torches) in earlier days
A street with steps in the Spanish Quarter

In another palazzo, we discovered this grand double staircase - a feature of palazzi in Naples.  Barbara is about to sing an aria ...

It appears Neapolitans have a sweet tooth - the Babà is everywhere  ...

Barbara snapped these Neapolitans getting their fix ...

An artist displays a series of paintings of the Neopolitan's worst nightmare - Vesuvius blows its top - again!
Port'Alba - the gateway from old Naples through to the relative sanity of Piazza Dante, and our "home".
