Naples is a huge city of one million people, so in a visit of just three days, we had to be selective. In the event, we were only ever in the old centre of town - narrow streets, very busy, a bit edgy and chaotic - we loved it!
| First stop - A Roman market underneath the 13th cent church of San Lorenzo are the intact remains of a set of streets comprising a Roman Market, only excavated and opened to the public recently - amazing! |
2nd stop - In the church of Pio Monte della Misericordia, there is a splendid painting by Caravaggio - the Seven Works of Mercy.
| | |
| 3rd stop - We became fascinated by the stairs of Naples! This is one of two similar monumental twin staircases built in huge palazzi in what is now a fairly poor area of town. The palazzi have now been converted into flats, and the stairway is freely accessible |
| An inside view - look at the size of that newel post! |
| 4th stop - more stairs! This time in the Museo Nazionale |
| A busy river Nile scene - mosaic from Pompeii |
| Naples is famed for its cameos. This is a wonderful vase made of "Cameo Glass" - Pompeii |
| Back at our flat, the army keep a look-out in Piazza Dante |
| Whilst, inside, as night falls, al is calm - Barbara resisting the urge to tinkle the ivories of our baby grand! |
| Time to go - Barbara and Bill and some 2-dimensional friends in the Central Rail Station ... |
| ... which itself is a giant mobile artwork ... |
